10 Movies Like Silver Linings Playbook

Silver Linings Playbook was one of the best movies of 2012.  It’s just a shame I didn’t get a chance to see it early enough to include it in my final 2012 movie rankings. Regardless, there is already a place reserved for the Blu Ray when it’s released.  Right next to the movies mentioned below.  Emotional dramas.  Character driven stories.  Human tales.  Highly entertaining movies that blend romance with personal growth seamlessly.

Movies that won the critical praise of fans and the Academy.  Silver Linings Playbook is nominated for 8 Oscars including Best Picture.  Combined the 10 films below share 52 Oscar Nominations and 15 wins.  7 out of 10 were nominated for Best Picture.

Odds are, one or two of your personal favorites are among these films if you loved Silver Linings Playbook.  Basically what I’m trying to say is…  It’s one of my favorite shelves.

HONORABLE MENTION: The Pursuit of Happyness, Juno, Stranger Than Fiction, The Blind Side

PATCH ADAMS

Equal parts funny and tragic.  This true story is full of moments that touch your heart.

The 71st Academy Awards:

Nominated for: Best Original Musical or Comedy Score

ALMOST FAMOUS

Cameron Crowe made a career out of making movies like Silver Linings Playbook.  They aren’t all mega hits but there are two that I adore and Almost Famous is one of them.

The 73rd Academy Awards:

  • Best Original Screenplay

Nominated for: Best Supporting Actress (x2), Best Film Editing

GARDEN STATE

From a screenwriting perspective, this movie really hit home when I saw it.  I love the tone of the film and the way it’s paced.  I’ve been developing a script for a little less than a year I describe as ‘my Garden State’.  Seems a bit odd to call it that on a list full of Oscar winners but I loved this movie.

THE DESCENDANTS

Another man who makes his living writing movies like Silver Linings Playbook is Alexander Payne.

The 84th Academy Awards:

  • Best Adapted Screenplay

Nominated for: Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Director, Best Editing

SIDEWAYS

Alexander Payne again.

“I am NOT drinking any f@$king merlot!”

XTRA | All Time Best: ‘Why so angry’ movie moment

LOST IN TRANSLATION

A charming tale from Sophia Coppola.

The 76th Academy Awards:

  • Best Original Screenplay

Nominated for: Best Picture, Best Director

AS GOOD AS IT GETS

One of Jack Nicholson’s finest performances also happens to be one of Helen Hunt’s as well.  Both come together in a brilliant story about love and the inspiration it ignites.

The 70th Academy Awards:

  • Best Actor
  • Best Actress

Nominated for: Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor, Best Editing, Best Original Score, Best Original Screenplay

JERRY MAGUIRE

Cameron Crowe again.  When it comes to writing great characters, Mr. Crowe has the quan.

The 69th Academy Awards:

  • Best Supporting Actor

Nominated for: Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Editing, Best Original Screenplay

FORREST GUMP

Easily one of the best dramas of all time.  Forrest Gump simultaneously captures your imagination and your heart as you follow him on an unbelievable journey.

The 67th Academy Awards:

  • Best Picture
  • Best Director
  • Best Actor
  • Best Film Editing
  • Best Visual Effects
  • Best Adapted Screenplay

GOOD WILL HUNTING

Gus Van Sant.  Another phenomenal director who creates fantastic dramas.  Good Will Hunting continually inspires the screenwriter in me whenever I see it.  (Which is at least twice a year.  At least.)

10 Awesome Movies Like Looper

10 Movies Like Looper | Looper 2012

INTIMATE SCIENCE FICTION TALES

Looper was one of my favorite movies of 2012.  I absolutely loved it.  It was such a great take on the familiar Time Travel genre.  Director Rian Johnson did a remarkable job creating a fascinating character driven tale.  If you haven’t seen Looper ignore the other films on this list and watch it immediately!  But then watch the other ones anyways.

I don’t think movies like Looper have to incorporate Time Travel though many do.  I associate Looper with many intimate science fiction tales with BIG ideas.  These movies take a much smaller approach to science fiction.  I suppose the opposite end of the spectrum is home to movies like Star Wars, The Matrix, Inception, Pacific Rim, Back to the Future etc…

XTRA | Looper Review

MONSTERS

Science Fiction Element: Aliens/Monsters

Monsters is the very definition of big ideas with intimate approaches.  Monsters is very much about aliens on our world but the real focus is on it’s two main characters.

REVIEW | Monster amount of character

FREQUENCY

Science Fiction Element: Time Travel

To me, Frequency is one of those movies I could watch any time.  I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the film.

PRIMER

Science Fiction Element: Time Travel

Once you get your head wrapped around the technology behind this movie, you’ll start wondering whether it’s really possible.

CLOVERFIELD

Science Fiction Element: Aliens/Monsters

A marketing campaign that captivated movie bloggers world wide.  What does the Cloverfield monster look like!  It’s a question that made the wait that much more satisfying when I finally saw the movie.

CHRONICLE

Science Fiction Element: Super Powers

Found footage.  Check.  Strange powers.  Check.  Somehow, Chronicle manages to shed it’s familiar plot devices and tell a touching and painful story about power.

REVIEW | Chronicle, Action Figures & The Super Power Dream

MOON

Science Fiction Element: (Can’t ruin movie)

The story of a man who works alone on the moon is definitely worth a look.  More of a psychological dissection than any other on this list.  Fantastic movie.

DONNIE DARKO

Science Fiction Element: Time Travel

Before The Matrix came along, this was the penultimate ‘Whoa’ movie.  To this day I pick up something new whenever I watch it.

SOURCE CODE

Science Fiction Element: Time Travel

I’d put Source Code right next to Frequency.  Director Duncan Jones created a phenomenal follow up to the highly entertaining Moon.  They’re both entertaining and thought provoking though I’d give the edge to Source Code.

REVIEW | Go back in time and see Source Code again.

DISTRICT 9

Science Fiction Element: Aliens/Monsters

Aliens as refugees.  When I saw the trailer for the first time I was blown away.  It was one of those awesome trailers that didn’t spoil the movie.  In fact, District 9 far exceeded it’s trailer’s ambitious promise.  I can’t wait to see Director Neill Blomkamp’ follow up Elysium.

SUPER 8

Science Fiction Element: Aliens/Monsters

Super 8 was my favorite movie of 2011.  Like the kids in the film, I grew up at that time making movies with my friends.  Super 8 captured my imagination like no other film in 2011.  I loved it.

10 Flicks: Best Fantasy Worlds In Movies | Top 10 Fantasy Worlds

FANTASTIC WORLDS

There have been so many classic films that have transported us to incredible new worlds and introduced us to people and places we’ve never seen before.

Many people will argue over which fantasy movies rank among the best of all time.  I would argue that The Lord of the Rings is at (or near) the top of many of those lists.  However, I’m not going to rank the best fantasy movies.

10 Flicks: Movies With Awesome Opening Scenes

UNFORGETTABLE OPENINGS

Click here for more 10 Flicks movie lists.

Mission Impossible 3

“We put an explosive charge in your head…”

The introduction of Owen Davian is ruthless and awesome.

Jaws

Tension.  We don’t need to see the shark to be terrified of what lies beneath the waves.

Inglourious Basterds

In true Tarantino fashion, Inglourious Basterds’ opening is full of amazing dialogue, suspense and action.

The Dark Knight

How could I leave out the introduction of one of the coolest villains we’ve ever seen on the big screen?  Not to mention it’s an incredible bank heist.

The Social Network

When they first announced ‘The Facebook Movie’ I was skeptical but within 2 minutes I was hooked.  This brilliant opening scene introduces us to a fascinating and flawed main character using nothing but well written dialogue.

Casino Royale

You can’t talk about opening scenes without James Bond’s name coming up.  With so many choices I had to go with Casino Royale for it’s quiet desaturated beauty.

Star Wars: A New Hope

Ignore the prequels.  Our first glimpse of Darth Vader is just as bad ass today.

Reservoir Dogs

Tarantino again.  I suppose you could put the opening scenes from all of his movies and they would feel right at home on this list.  Obviously Pulp Fiction belongs but Reservoir Dogs is no slouch when it comes to openings.  Only Tarantino can make something as ‘ordinary’ as tipping waitresses so unbelievably interesting.

Drive

…  Look there’s a cop car…  No big deal, I’ll just drive the speed limit because I’ve got nerves of steel…

Easily one of the best ‘getaway’ scenes you’ll ever see and an absolutely awesome beginning to a great movie.

Goodfellas

Truly embodies the meaning of iconic.  Goodfellas grabs you the second the gangsters open the trunk and never lets go.
