Introducing Nerd Infinite!

Nerd Infinite

Just over two years ago, I shut down The Athletic Nerd in order to focus on other projects.  It was bitter sweet letting go of this blog.  I spent over four years writing articles for this site and I missed writing about movies.  But it was time to move on.

Since then, I’ve developed and launched The Screenwriting Spark!  Today, it’s one of the largest collections of screenwriting resources on the web!  There are hundreds of resources, guides, videos and more with much more to come.  Yet still, I missed blogging about movies and television.

Today, I’m pleased to announce Nerd Infinite!  A brand new movie and television blog I’m proud to be a part of.  It may not be a direct sequel to The Athletic Nerd but many elements have carried over.  There are new countdowns, new breakdowns, new features and much more.  Nerd Infinite will also carry on this blog’s dedication to independent film.  Especially short films.  Kicking off the September 1st launch is a 30 day short film festival featuring some of the shorts posted here long ago!

Below you’ll find all the relevant links to keep up to date on the new site.  It’s good to be writing about the stories I love once again!

Game of Thrones Moment: Mhysa | Season 3 Episode 10 Review

SEASON 3 EPISODE 10
MHYSA

Let’s face it.  The season finale didn’t have a chance to live up to the high standard set by last week’s penultimate episode, The Rains of Castamere.  However, at it’s core, this show is all about defying expectations and crashing through the barriers of traditional television structure.  Main characters die while others disappear for multiple episodes.  Why not accept that the big moments of Game of Thrones occur in the second last episode?  Rather than save everything for the finale, allow for an extra chapter to wrap things up.

That’s exactly what Mhysa felt like.  An episode used to sum up the events of The Red Wedding while setting the stage for next Spring’s fourth season.  I suppose I accept the fact that the big moments already happened but part of me was still hoping for another jaw dropping moment.  It didn’t happen and this episode was difficult to narrow down to a single moment.

I could have gone with the looming threat of the White Walkers.  Specifically when Davos hands Stannis the note proclaiming that a giant undead army marches south.  Almost immediately, Stannis switches his focus to the White Walkers, allowing Davos to live in the process.  It’s always nice when characters discuss events occurring elsewhere in Westeros.  There is a very real threat scaling The Wall and even though the White Walkers were barely mentioned this season, their existence is still a fascinating part of this show.  Winter is coming indeed.

I was going to select the titular scene featuring Daenerys.  It was a fantastic moment to see another army of freed slaves cheer for their Mhysa (Mother).  In the end, I didn’t select it because we saw a similar moment in ‘And now his watch has ended.’

There were also many reunions including Jaime’s return to King’s Landing and Jon Snow’s return to The Watch with several arrows piercing his body.  There was Arya’s brutal attack and… ahem…  D**ks in boxes…

But seriously, how could I not select Tywin who literally dominated the King we all love to hate.

“Did you just send the most powerful man in Westeros in bed without his supper?” (Tyrion)

send the most powerful man in Westeros in bed without his supper.

Beyond the hilarity of the situation, Tyrion’s threats won’t go unchecked much longer.  I thought that scene was brilliant.  Finally, Joffrey is beginning to realize he is truly powerless.  That spells doom for those who mock him.  Either that or he will be killed off.  I wouldn’t be surprised.

It’s hard to imagine Game of Thrones continually raising the bar but they managed to create another unforgettable season of television regardless.  There were so many spectacular moments throughout the complex story lines they weaved together so seamlessly.

Next season is so far away…

Game of Thrones Moment: The Rains of Castamere | Season 3 Episode 9

SEASON 3 EPISODE 9
THE RAINS OF CASTAMERE

MASSIVE SPOILER ALERT…  SERIOUSLY!

I didn’t see a single episode of Game of Thrones until the first season ended.  People at work kept talking about an epic new series that I absolutely had to see.  I gave the show a chance and wound up watching the entire season in a day or two.  But I wasn’t hooked until Ned Stark’s lost his head.  It was clear that Game of Thrones did not adhere to traditional television rules.  No one is ever safe on this show including the main protagonist.  They’ve done it again.

Before I get to this week’s obvious pick for best moment, I want to express my thanks to everyone I know that has read the books.  Holding on to the secret of the Red Wedding must have been excruciating throughout the last three seasons.  No one I know spoiled this heartbreaking moment and somehow I managed to avoid all spoilers online..

I didn’t see it coming. (Final spoiler warning)

The Rains of Castamere is as close to perfect as television can be.  Once again, Game of Thrones gave us a reminder that no one is safe including the King in the North.  I can’t even imagine how readers of the novels must have felt watching Robb travel to his death over the years.  Then it finally arrives.  Walder Frey welcomes Robb, Talisa and Cat into his home and promptly betrays them all.

Much like Ned’s death, this was a series defining moment.

The ruthless scene is highlighted by Cat in what is surely an award worthy performance as she watches her eldest son die.  I felt the same devastation she did.  Robb has long been a favorite of mine but those damn Lannisters are always a mile ahead of everyone.

This morning I woke up thinking about the remaining heroes and who could be next.  Daenerys?  Tyrion? Arya?  Jon Snow? Slowly the heroes of Westeros are becoming extinct.  Out numbered by ruthless jerks like King Joffrey, Walder Frey, Tywin Lannister and more.

I love this show BECAUSE of the sadness I felt when the credits rolled silently on my television (nice touch by the way).  I sat there stunned wondering how this phenomenal season of television will end next week.  Then I was sad all over again because it all ends next week…  Dammit I love Game of Thrones.

The Rains of Castamere will surely be known as one of Game of Thrones’ best episodes containing a legendary moment I’ll never forget.  I still can’t believe I managed to avoid this monumental spoiler.  Part of me wants to pick up the novels I purchased last year to find out what’s coming next…  It’s a tough call.

In other news… Holy crap!  I can’t believe that happened!

Game of Thrones Moment: Second Sons | Season 3 Episode 8 Review

SEASON 3 EPISODE 8
SECOND SONS

Last week I was admittedly disappointed in the episode as little forward progress was made in the majority of the story lines.  Game of Thrones usually follows up slower episodes with huge moments…  And that’s exactly what happened in ‘Second Sons’.

Leaving behind most of the stories and characters we visited last week, this episode focused on three main threads.  All of which gave us incredible moments yet none of them won the episode.  If you’ve been reading my recaps this season you know exactly which moment I loved the most.

Before we got that that moment, we got to see Gendry’s arrival at Dragonstone play out…  The poor guy found out he’s not on vacation in the worst way.  The thought of a leech to the nuts is absolutely terrifying.  (Though not as terrifying as Theon’s experience last week.)  We’ll see what his… ahem…  King’s blood will accomplish through Melisandre’s scorcery soon enough I’m sure.  Are we destined for a super smoke monster or something worse?

Back in King’s Landing, Tyrion and Sansa got married in a ceremony laced with Joffrey’s mischief.  He’s an asshole.  Still, putting up with the King’s antics led to one of the best moments of the season.  Tyrion stabbing that knife into the table and threatening the King was fantastic.

Daenerys has really grown this season.  Last year, she spent the majority of her time trying to win people over without much success.  Now, she gets what she wants and managed to get the titular second sons to join her cause with ease.  No dragons required.  She just had to be hot apparently.  Side note: What ever happened to the Warlocks that were hunting her?

Those three stories were awesome but I HAVE to award the moment of the episode to the White Walker!

Game of Thrones Moment: Second Sons | Season 3 Episode 8 Review

FINALLY A WHITE WALKER APPEARS IN SEASON 3!

If there is one thing that frustrated me about Season 3 it was the absence of the characters that ended season 2 so brilliantly.  A whole army of White Walkers marching on The Wall only to disappear without a mention for 7 episodes.  I thought for sure Jon and Ygritte would spot a few as they scaled The Wall.  They didn’t.

I’m not sure how they will factor into the final 2 episodes of the season but I’m glad to see they haven’t been forgotten entirely.  Although, it did feel a bit random to have one attack Sam and Gilly considering there is an army of them roaming somewhere in the North.

Regardless, watching him shatter like that was pretty fantastic.  These guys are probably a huge drain on the shows budget so saving them makes sense.  I would have been happy with a mention before now but I’ll take it.  Welcome to Season 3 White Walkers!  It’s about time.
