I was writing an angry monologue in my new screenplay and kept catching myself dragging it out far longer than it needed to be.  So I broke it down into beats and really thought about what I wanted the character to say.  It got me thinking about my favorite movie rants and…  Here we are!

A Few Good Men is an amazing movie in every way but for me, it’s the screenplay that shines the brightest.  Court room dramas aren’t normally ‘quotable’ movies but you can’t argue with the impact Jack and Tom’s epic clashes have had on pop culture.

However, my favorite angry rant comes a little earlier than Kaffee and Jessep’s amazing showdown.  It happens when all hope is lost and Demi Moore’s character suggests the impossible.  The result is one hell of an entertaining scene.

What I love about this scene is how they managed to balance the seriousness of the situation with the absolute right amount humor.  Type writer maintenance?  Tom Cruise’s performance here is amazing and it’s always been one of the most memorable moments from the film for me.

After finding that clip, I went back and restarted my own angry monologue with a fresh approach.  It took some time but eventually I came up with a way to write it without slowing the scene down.  I think I was trying too hard to be clever.  The more I cut out, the better the scene became.

It’s all thanks to inspiring scenes from movies like A Few Good Men.  A film I turn to often when I’m looking for inspiration.
