Review 2010 Skyline I can see why no one wanted to see skyline with me

It’s no secret that I was eagerly anticipating Skyline.

I love alien movies especially invasion scenarios. It’s my favorite “what if” type of film.

Even after all the negative reviews and bad buzz I still wanted to give it a shot.  Since none of my friends wanted to see it, I thought I would check it out on my own.  I love going to movies by myself but make no mistake…

Skyline is a dumb movie.

Before you say I told you so, let me also say that it wasn’t nearly as bad as many people think.  I read an article on JOBLO where the filmmakers admitted they were surprised that audiences didn’t like their movie.

I can see how. The movie doesn’t really make much sense and the main characters aren’t really that likable.  I think the directors were banking on the effects and sci fi elements which I thought were actually pretty cool. (Mostly)

Yes it made no sense at points. You never really get a clear sense of what’s going on.  The story is essentially non existent.  Characters make dumb decisions while others become superheroes with incredible strength for some reason.

I found myself frustrated at times while the group of survivors yelled at each other in a sealed apartment.

Raise the blinds! The aliens outside are much more entertaining!

When they finally did raise them, I thought the film had some pretty cool ideas. The nuke sequence in particular was pretty sweet. There weren’t many moments like that but there was enough that I didn’t hate Skyline.

If I had to give it a score it would be 4 out of 10 which for me means I would only recommend it to die hard alien movie buffs.

However, I’m going to give it a 5 because the film delivered on something I was hoping for from the moment I saw the first teaser trailer.

It shows you what happens in those ships!

I’ll get back to that.  I want to make a note that the movie is NOTHING like this trailer suggests.  There is no mention of probes or news stories or anything.  The aliens just show up.  Apparently the directors forgot to tell people that important back story information is in the trailers…  Woops.

Back to the ships.

Spielberg’s War of the Worlds kind of did this as well and I was really hoping they wouldn’t just roll the credits without at least giving the audience something.

I won’t divulge what’s really going on in those ships but I will say that it will either entertain you or cause a laughing fit at how dumb it is.

It depends on the types of movies you love.

Skyline isn’t a great movie. I didn’t find the ending that great but it does get points for trying something different.

I can see why no one wanted to come with me. I really wish I could tell people they were wrong.  In this instance I cannot but I’m always going to give a movie the benefit of the doubt.

At least I have Battle: Los Angeles to look forward to.  It looks infinitely cooler than Skyline ever did.  Let the anticipation begin!

Ironically, these two films are linked by a controversy you might be curious to read about.
