New Battleship Trailer Turns The Tides

WILL THE NEW TRAILER CONVINCE YOU?

A lot of people yawn and cringe at the thought of a Transformer movie.  Most of the time, people will tolerate the first film but dismiss the other two as pointless noise.  I suppose I agree with that if you don’t like gigantic spectacles on the big screen.  Personally, I hated the second Transformers film because the story was atrocious but I still crave big summer action movies.

When it was first announced that Peter Berg would helm a movie based on the Battleship board game, I reacted much like the rest of the online community…  What?  Indeed, this projects up hill battle began the second the project was unveiled.  But then something funny happened.  People started hearing details about an alien invasion at sea and suddenly, it sounded less like the board game and more like a cool summer movie.

The first trailer came out and turned more heads:

It’s an interesting introduction to the film although I have to admit the ‘peg’ bombs are a little too much.  However, the second trailer really kicked the action into high gear.  Now people aren’t talking about the inspiration for the film.  It’s become a debate on whether Battleship will be as fun as the original Transformers or as disappointing as Transformers 2.

XTRA | Apology Accepted Michael Bay

It’s clear that Hasbro, the company behind Transformers and Battleship, is trying to capitalize on the big box numbers Optimus and Co. achieved.  Close your eyes and you could swear Michael Bay had released another trailer full of robot mayhem.  The sound effects in this trailer alone are practically stolen from the Transformers franchise.

The thing is, we need films like Battleship every once in a while.  Imagine the possibilities if Berg delivers a fun movie with a decent story full of visual thrills and incredible effects.  That’s what summer movies are all about.  I think ‘The Rundown‘ was a seriously underrated action movie.  Berg proved then as he has done numerous times that he is a fully capable action director.

Next summer is one of the most crowded and promising movie seasons in recent memory.  The Dark Knight Rises, The Avengers and The Amazing Spider-Man are enough but maybe Battleship will sneak in on May 8, 2012 and kick start the summer in style.  Perhaps it isn’t just a movie based on a boring board game after all?
