FANTASTIC WORLDS

There have been so many classic films that have transported us to incredible new worlds and introduced us to people and places we’ve never seen before.

Many people will argue over which fantasy movies rank among the best of all time.  I would argue that The Lord of the Rings is at (or near) the top of many of those lists.  However, I’m not going to rank the best fantasy movies.

10 Flicks Movie Lists

I’m a proud movie nerd.

We’ve covered that so it shouldn’t surprise anyone who reads this blog that I follow box office numbers closely.  The only place I go for box office information online is Box Office Mojo.

Recently, I was checking the all time domestic numbers and decided to see if I could narrow the top 100 down to 10.  Can you?

Click here to see the Top 100

So here are my 10 favorite box office moneymakers.

Honourable Mention: Avatar, 300, The Sixth Sense, Saving Private Ryan

Star Wars

Star Wars Episode 4

#4 – $460,998,007

I adore the original trilogy and enjoyed the prequels but A New Hope will always be my favorite. (Followed closely by Empire Strikes Back.)

XTRA | If I Could Only Recommend ONE Science Fiction Film

Spider-Man

Spider-Man

#9 – $403,706,375

It may not be my favorite superhero movie of all time but it certainly paved the way for some of the most entertaining movies in history.

“Go web go!”

Lord Of The Rings: Return Of The King

Lord Of The Rings

#12 – $377,027,325

It’s tough to pick one movie when all three are in the top 100.  I look at the series and see one giant incredible movie but I had to pick one so ROTK was the winner.

XTRA | Movies That Changed Everything: The Lord of the Rings

Transformers

Transformers Optimus Prime

#22 – $319,246,193

Even though I absolutely hated the sequel, the original is one of the most entertaining popcorn movies I’ve ever seen on the big screen.  It had giant fighting robots and some of the best and most complex visual effects ever created.

XTRA | Transformers 3?  Apology accepted Michael Bay

Independence Day

Independence Day Area 51 Attack

#30 – $306,169,268

Will Smith is my favorite actor.  I’m one of the reasons his movies always make 100 million+ in theaters.  Independence Day will always be one of the greats.  ID4 is a perfect example of a huge box office blockbuster.  Big stars, big FX and big thrills.

XTRA | Wouldn’t it be awesome if Independence Day 2 was about…

Signs

signs_mel_gibson_shyamalan

#70 – $227,966,634

I talk about Signs a lot on this site. I even thought about leaving it off this list to avoid ‘Signs fatigue’.  However, I simply couldn’t bring myself to leave my all time favorite movie off the list.

The Matrix Reloaded

The Matrix Reloaded Trinity

#41 – $281,576,461

It’s ambitious, it’s explosive, it’s cool and it’s confusing.  It was once the record holder for most anticipated movie until it was toppled by The Dark Knight years later.

XTRA | What THE MATRIX screenplay taught me

Twister

Twister Helen Hunt Tornado

#61 – $241,721,524

Twister may surprise some people but I’ve always loved this movie.  When I was a kid, I used to be terrified of tornado warnings.  This eventually ignited an interest in weather and this movie came along right in the middle of that childhood obsession.  Twister is a fun movie. Plain and Simple.

Jurassic Park

jurassic_park_trex

#15 – $357,067,947

To this day, I’m still fascinated by how well the effects stand up compared to today’s standards.  Such a fun movie.

The Dark Knight

dark-knight-joker

#3 – $533,345,358

My second favorite movie ever.  I’ve never been so excited to see a movie in my entire life and to have the film deliver on all the hype was amazing.

Try narrowing down your own list of 10 box office favorites.  It’s not that easy.

10 Flicks: Horror Movies With Great Stories

10 Flicks: Horror Movies With Great Stories

I love horror films. There’s nothing like genuinely being scared at the movies.

It’s like riding on a roller coaster: You’re terrified to ride it but in the end you’re always happy you did.

Note: Except the rides that spin. Those shouldn’t exist.

Many non horror fans complain that most horror films are too gory or pointless. That the stories are never good. They say that characters only exist so the killer can fold them in half.

I agree that some horror films are like that.  They simply don’t give you a chance to connect to the characters before they meet their gruesome end. Stories merely exist to get you from one kill to the next.

However, there are fantastic horror movies out there that have incredible stories to back up the thrills. That’s why this post exists.

Here are my top 10 horror movies with great stories:

The Ring

10 Flicks: Horror movies with great stories

Every once in a while a movie comes along and does things differently.  There are so many ‘messed up demon kid’ stories out there. (Some are classics)  The Ring came along and put a modern spin on it and scared the crap out of me. Something about that horse going crazy still gives me the creeps.

Exorcist

10 Flicks: Horror movies with great stories

You can’t make a list like this and not include one of the greatest horror stories of all time. I saw this movie for the first time in college simply because I avoided it until then.  Needless to say, it still terrified me but it was the story that resonated…  Okay I’ll admit that girls messed up face did as well.

The Shining

10 Flicks: Horror movies with great stories

So many people adore this film.  Horror fans especially.  How can you not be pulled into a story featuring a crazy Jack Nicholson and made by the legendary Stanley Kubrick?

Alien

10 Flicks: Horror movies with great stories

Alien is a phenomenon.  Those acid filled jerks have terrified millions of people for years and inspired so many films since it’s release.  Alien made the list for pairing a great story with one of the scariest creature designs in movie history.

Scream

10 Flicks: Horror movies with great stories

When I was asking around for people’s ideas on this list, many turned their noses up at Scream.  I think they’ve blended all three together in one film.  I told all of them to think about how much fun it was to watch the original for the first time. I didn’t know who the killer would be.  Did you?  The mystery was also wrapped up in countless movie references and nods.  Scream deserves to be on this list.

The Exorcism of Emily Rose

10 Flicks: Horror movies with great stories

This movie stuck with me long after I left the theater. Films that deal with this subject have always fascinated me and this one stood out because of it’s court room premise.  It’s a horror movie but also a drama that forces you to choose who you believe.  Audience participation in a horror film.  Genius.   Also, when she speaks as 6 different people at once I almost cried.  Just saying.

Silence Of The Lambs

10 Flicks: Horror movies with great stories

Arguably the best film on this list with Uncle Oscar backing it up.  Who knew delving into the mind of a psychopathic killer would be so much fun.  It’s truly fascinating to watch the exchanges between Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster on screen.  They are filled with intensity and fuel the horrifying scenes to come.   Brilliant flick.

Jaws

10 Flicks: Horror movies with great stories

I’ll be honest.  When I made this list, I completely forgot about Jaws and then kicked myself for my lack of respect for one of the greatest movies ever made.  People who haven’t even seen the movie are afraid of it.  That’s how powerful the story is.  Thankfully, I smartened up before posting and avoided any hate mail it may have caused.

Saw

10 Flicks: Horror movies with great stories

The moment the big ‘twist’ is revealed my face dropped and I actually yelled “What!” in the theater. Normally that’s rude but people around me were just as shocked.  All of the sudden the death traps, gore and mayhem meant more than just the usual ‘horror candy’ we love.  This movie is on this list purely because of how much fun I had watching it and learning about Jigsaw’s world.

The Sixth Sense

10 Flicks: Horror movies with great stories

Speaking of incredible twist endings.  This film was ruined for me and yet I was still captivated by the story. It’s a shame that M. Night Shyamalan is too afraid of being type cast as I would gladly welcome his talent back into the genre.  He’s not making too many friends in the other genres anyways.  Come back Night!

10 Flicks: Alien Weaknesses

10 Flicks: Strange Ways To Kill Movie Aliens | Top 10 Strange Ways To Kill An Alien | Movie Blog

GUNS AND GIANT BOMBS
ARE NOT ALWAYS THE ANSWER

Thousands of Aliens have invaded big screens around the world.  There are countless stories of vicious species determined to kill us but also lovable beings that touched our hearts.

Regardless, there is always someone who wants to take them out.  Most of the time, humans call in the big guns, tanks and jets to do the dirty work but there are instances when guns aren’t the answer.

Sometimes, the key to everything lies in a very simple and unexpected solution.  However, it’s important to remember that not all Aliens are evil.  Who would want to use E.T’s home sickness against him?  That’s mean.

Here are 10 of the best Alien weaknesses.

Space Jam
Basketball

Sometimes, defeating Aliens is just a matter of challenging them to competitive game of basketball and recruiting his royal Airness. (Oh and Bill Murray too.)

Pitch Black
Light

What are the odds that a prisoner who can only see in the dark finds himself on a planet with horrible monsters who only come out at night?  Furthermore, what are the odds this prisoner would find himself on this planet juuuuuuust when a solar eclipse goes down?  Bring on the light.

Mars Attacks
Music/Yodeling

These fierce Martians are no match for the Indian Love Call.

War of the Worlds
Bacteria

Like Signs, I feel like this species should have done more research before invading our planet.  You have to do your research!

Men In Black 2: Ballchinian
Balls

It’s bad enough getting kicked in the groin but getting chin punched in the ball throat?  Now THAT’S a weakness.

Spider-Man 3: Venom
Sound

The space goop’s only weakness lies high on the decibel meter.  Bells, gongs and other loud noises work nicely.  In this case, a series of metal pipes arranged in a circular xylophone type formation.

E.T
Home Sickness

He just wants to go home!

Signs
Water

These Aliens were taking one hell of a risk invading Earth to harvest us.  I don’t know if they noticed but there is a lot of water here.

Independence Day
Computer Virus

Technologically advanced Alien civilizations have no answer for Jeff Goldblum’s quick thinking and hacking skills.

Superman
Kryptonite

Arguably the most famous fictional Alien of all time is seemingly invincible except for a certain green rock.

Perhaps Alien strengths will be the next list…

10 Flicks: Incredible Upcoming Superhero Movies

I believe we are entering a Golden Age for superhero movies.

There are so many incredible films on the way with loads of potential.

How good are the upcoming superhero movies?

Here are 10 of the biggest and best.  Check them out and count how many you’re looking forward to.

*Be sure to come back as I will be updating this page with new images and trailers as they are released.*

Thor

Thor. Upcoming superhero movies 2011

Thor is probably my least anticipated film on this list because I really don’t know that much about the character.  However, Thor has a giant role to play in the upcoming Avengers movie so I’m definitely interested in learning more.  Part of me truly hopes it turns out to be a bad ass action adventure.

The first trailer has been released!  I’m officially pumped to see this movie.

The super bowl spot unleashes more action!

Cowboys & Aliens

The first poster for the film has been released and it looks amazing!

It looks like John Favreau and co. are unleashing one hell of an entertaining film next summer.

X-Men: First Class

Hardcore fans of Bryan Singer’s X-Men may not be so eager to embrace this reboot but I am.  I’m not sure what to expect from this adaptation but I’m a massive fan of the source material.  Plus I have enormous faith in Matthew Vaughn.  Kick ass was fantastic.

x men first class movie magneto

The Green Hornet

This movie sounded extremely strange when I first heard about it.  Could Seth Rogen really be a superhero? After seeing the first trailer, I believe the answer is yes.  He is a different kind of superhero but it still looks like an entertaining movie.

The Amazing Spider-Man

First look at Andrew Garfield as spider-man

[UPDATE] The first official image of Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man has hit the web!  I have to say it looks pretty damn sweet!

The first two Spider-Man movies are among the best superhero movies of all time. Understandably, it was time to inject some new life into the franchise and I actually think that rebooting with a younger Peter Parker is the right way to go.

My only real concern is whether or not the filmmakers can balance the inevitable high school drama with decent action sequences. I’m already sold on Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man and now that we know he will face off against The Lizard, I’m even more excited about the possibilities.

Check out this amazing image of Andrew Garfield in costume with the legendary mask on!

The Amazing Spiderman Andrew Garfield superhero movie

Captain America: The First Avenger

Captain America looks awesome | Poster

Captain America is in the same category as Thor.  I don’t know too much about him but I’m extremely interested in how Marvel will tie all of their big franchises together.  If the movie is half as good as the image above we are in for one hell of a show.

Superbowl commercial…  I gotta say the shot with Cap running through a forest in the middle of battle was amazing.  So was Red Skulls reveal.  Still I wasn’t blown away by the spot.

Green Lantern

Green lantern ryan reynolds 2011 superhero movie

Ryan Reynolds is definitely on a huge roll right now. Every single Green Lantern image that I’ve seen has been amazing.

Now that the trailer has been unleashed, I have to say it does look pretty damn entertaining.

Check out the first 4 minutes from the film.

The Avengers

The Avengers upcoming superhero movie 2012

Did anyone ever think this film would have come together the way it did?

Count the superstars on that stage.  It’s truly remarkable what Marvel has done with their superhero franchises.

This is probably the riskiest film on this list as the amount of hype surrounding this movie is enormous.

It’s going to be extremely challenging to deliver something entertaining with that many heroes on the screen.

Again it all comes down to the story. They definitely have the star power but it’s up to Joss Whedon and his team to come up with something worthy of one of the best ensembles in history.

Whether they nail it or not, The Avengers is going to rewrite the superhero movie forever.

I can’t wait to watch Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America, The Incredible Hulk and The Avengers ‘marathon style’.

Unreal…

NOTE: This film isn’t released until 2012 but I didn’t think it would hurt to update it regardless considering so many movies on this list will affect the production.

Transformers: Dark Of The Moon

10 Flicks: Awesome Upcoming Superhero Movies 2011

Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen was terrible.

Click here to find out why Transformers 3 won’t suck.

I’m so excited to see more giant robot action on the big screen. Everything I’ve read about the film gives me more and more confidence that they will erase the memory of The Fallen from my mind.

I was so excited to see that movie and I was shattered when the credits rolled.  I wish it wasn’t the case but it’s true.  However, I’ll never give up on a franchise easily.

I’ll be in line on day 1 for this blockbuster event… In 3D.

The Transformers are back!  I loved the Superbowl commercial!  This is probably my most anticipated movie of the summer thus far!

Superman

[Update] Henry Cavill has officially been announced as the new Superman.  Nice!

Handing the keys to the Superman franchise over to Christopher Nolan was genius.  The guy simply knows how to tell a good story.

He’s easily my favorite directors right now and having his name attached instantly puts this film at the top of the list.

Then…

He went out and hired Zak Snyder to direct the movie with a screenplay written by David Goyer…

You hear that?  That’s the sound of the best Superman adaptation of all time.

Yes… I’m prepared to make that statement.

Get ready for a gritty slow motion filled adventure featuring one of the most iconic heroes in history.

The Dark Knight Rises

[UPDATE] Catwoman and Bane! Anne Hathaway and Tom Hardy are confirmed as the infamous villains in The Dark Knight Rises

The Dark Knight is my favorite superhero movie in the history of the world.  Nothing against the amazing Batman Begins but The Dark Knight is THE definitive Batman movie.

This third and presumably final Batman film that Nolan will give us will pull out all the stops and raise the stakes like never before.

I like to think that he had a plan the entire time and was always building towards this third chapter.  Whether that’s true or not may never be revealed but I have no doubt Mr. Nolan has a few surprises in store for us.  It saddens me to think about his vision for The Joker and how he may have carried over to this film.

It’s a shame we won’t get a chance to see Heath Ledger’s wonderful work on screen again.  The word ‘legendary’ comes to mind.

The next villain that Bruce Wayne faces will definitely have some giant shoes to fill.  Yet, somehow, I truly believe he/she will.

There’s no way this movie will fall flat even with the nearly impossible expectations people like me have.

I have a feeling this film will complete one of the greatest trilogies ever.

Which movie are you anticipating?  Are there several?

It truly is a good time to be a fan of superhero movies!
