It’s that time of year!  The season where all the Oscar contenders are released, discussed & analyzed.  It’s a phenomenal season for film fans.   While I attempt to catch up on my enormous ‘must watch’ list, I’m still thinking about next summer.  It’s never too early to get excited for the next wave of summer blockbusters.

I chose these 10 films for two reasons.  First, they are scheduled to be released between May 1, 2013 & August 31, 2013.  Second, they look awesome.  Simple enough.  Let’s get to it!

Which summer movies are you looking forward to in 2013?

Note: I’ll be updating this page as the official trailers are released.

Let the hype begin!

Honorable Mention: Oblivion (Opens April 2013)

10. KICK ASS 2

June 28, 2013

Kick Ass was a ton of fun having gone in with no knowledge of the comic.  It was packed with over-the-top violence and the sequel is sure to deliver more of the same.  AND They’ve added comedy heavyweight Jim Carrey to the mix.

I’m a big fan of new franchises and Gore Verbinski has launched several.  (I wish he was still bringing Bioshock to the big screen.) There’s no doubt The Lone Ranger will be visually stunning and full of amazing action.  It’s just a shame they forgot to REALLY include the titular character in the first trailer.  I get the thought process behind the marketing.  Johnny Depp is a global star after all and it certainly looks like he has created another memorable character.  But Armie Hammer is an after thought here.  It’s a minor complaint as I’m sure he has plenty to do in the film.  But seriously, Depp does look awesome as Tonto.

[Update] We got a second Lone Ranger trailer that features The Lone Ranger!  Much better.

District 9 was absolutely incredible.  I can’t wait to see what Neill Blomkamp has in store for us next August.  Not much is known about the film outside of the people who saw and raved about the comic-con footage so here is a synopsis:

“In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a hard line government official, will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.”

The original Fast & Furious came along right around the time I got my driver’s license.  Now, I never pimped my rusted 1996 Chevrolet Cavalier but I did love the movie.  Then 2 Fast came along and ruined everything.  I completely skipped Tokyo Drift but something funny happened.  The 4th installment came along…  And I liked it?  It wasn’t anywhere near the level of the first but at least the whole gang was back.

Fast 5 changed the game and took the franchise in a completely different direction.  They added The Rock and suddenly, the Fast & Furious series became a heist franchise.  I thought Fast 5 was great especially with the revelation in the end credits.  Why not?  I like the characters.  I like the new direction.  Bring on Part 6.

A while back, I wrote an article detailing two important streaks on the line when After Earth is released.  Will Smith’s hits vs M. Night Shyamalan’s flops.  One of them will end.  I’m sure many people will bet that Will Smith will be starring in the latest Shyamalan dud…  Or maybe he won’t.

Signs is my favorite movie period.  I always get perplexed looks when I admit that but it’s true.  That movie came along at the right time and stuck with me.  I’ve been waiting a long time for another classic to come from the mind of M. Night Shyamalan.  (The Last Airbender was certainly not it.)

But I really love the concept behind After Earth:

“In After Earth, one thousand years after cataclysmic events forced humanity’s escape from Earth, Nova Prime has become mankind’s new home. Legendary General Cypher Raige (played by Will Smith) returns from an extended tour of duty to his estranged family, ready to be a father to his 13-year-old son, Kitai (played by Jaden Smith). When an asteroid storm damages Cypher and Kitai’s craft, they crash-land on a now unfamiliar and dangerous Earth. As his father lies dying in the cockpit, Kitai must trek across the hostile terrain to recover their rescue beacon. His whole life, Kitai has wanted nothing more than to be a soldier like his father. Today, he gets his chance.”

Which streak will end?

X-Men Origins: Wolverine was awful.  In my opinion, it was the worst movie of 2009.  So why is Wolverine so high on this list?  They are essentially ignoring the first solo movie completely.  Nice.  I love the character and the idea of a bad ass Wolverine adventure is still exciting.  Especially one without plot holes and Deadpool.  Can you even call him Deadpool?

I highly enjoy J.J Abrams movies. (Not to mention the excellent TV series he’s created.) Mission Impossible 3 is still my favorite of the four,  Super 8 was actually my favorite movie of 2011 and I adored Star Trek.  Honestly, I was never a Star Trek fan until the new film came along.  It’s not that I didn’t like it, I just never got around to watching it as a kid.  At that time, it was Next Generation so I really had no exposure to Captain Kirk & Spock at all.

Star Trek was a blast to watch even with all those lens flares.  I can’t wait to see what J.J does with the franchise now that the characters & rules are established.  Of course it is a J.J Abrams production so we know nothing about the project yet.

The Avengers took the Superhero genre to astonishingly new heights.  Marvel pulled it off…  Now what?  Phase Two!

XTRA | Top 10 Moments: The Avengers

The Marvel Cinematic Universe rolls on with a much darker Iron Man.  This trailer may go down as my favorite of 2012 unless another comes along to dethrone it.  It’ll be tough to beat.  Right off the bat, Tony Stark mentions the devastation left in Loki’s wake after his army was defeated.  Now Tony is haunted.  It’s the perfect time for one of Iron Man’s deadliest foes to appear on the big screen.  The Mandarin.  Right off the bat, you can see that Tony Stark is going to get beaten down in this film.  I can’t wait to see how he picks himself up.

I didn’t like Superman Returns at all.  Where was the action?  Why was it so long?  Much like Wolverine, I’m glad Zack Snyder is rebooting the Man of Steel from scratch with a more realistic approach.  It helps to have Christopher Nolan on board.  Will Superman fill the void left now that Nolan’s remarkable Batman trilogy is over?

In a word: Yes.

I think Man of Steel will be the Superman movie fans have been dreaming of for decades.  The first trailer is proof:

Guillermo Del Toro + Giant Robots + Equally Giant Monsters = My most anticipated movie of the 2013 summer movie season.  By far!  I’m so excited I can’t stand it.  Del Toro is truly blessed with an incredibly visual and COOL imagination.  I think Pacific Rim is poised to become of the coolest movies of all time and I don’t say that lightly.  Giant robots are going to fight giant monsters!  ……….  And Guillermo Del Toro is responsible for the mayhem!

XTRA | Top 5 Moments: Pacific Rim Trailer #1

July 12!  July 12! July 12! July 12!

“When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end.  To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge.  But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju.  On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past.  Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.”

I’m glad I don’t know anything about Guardians of the Galaxy

I'm glad I don't know anything about Guardians of the Galaxy | Preview

When Thanos smiled at the very thought of courting death at the end of The Avengers, it was clear Marvel had a cosmic slate in mind.  They’ve already referenced Thanos by displaying the Infinity Gauntlet in Thor so I wouldn’t be surprised if this new threat appears in Thor: The Dark World in some way.  But it will be interesting to see if they include Thanos in Iron Man 3 and Captain America: The Winter Soldier.  Those franchises weren’t really linked to the stars until Cap and Stark joined forces to fight Loki’s army in The Avengers.

How will Phase Two’s slate of blockbusters connect together?  What part will Thanos play?  What do Joss Whedon and Marvel have in store for us?

This is why Guardians of the Galaxy is a key addition to the universe.  It’s a perfect way to focus on the cosmos and truly develop a threat far greater than Loki’s ego.

Although…  I really have no idea what to expect from a franchise I know nothing about…

To be honest, I’m pretty excited that I can go into this film and discover a new world…  That’s kind of connected to a world I’m very familiar with.

Here is an official log line:

“A U.S. pilot who ends up in space in the middle of a universal conflict and goes on the run with futuristic ex-cons who have something everyone wants.”

A little digging online helped me understand how the Guardians factor into the Thanos storyline.  It’s easy to understand why Marvel gave this movie the green light.  I’m willing to leave it at that.  But I thought I’d include some Thanos/Guardians links I found around the web:

I'm glad I don't know anything about Guardians of the Galaxy | Preview

I’m far from an expert on comic books and I certainly haven’t delved into the farthest corners of Marvel’s universe but I’m excited to meet some new people.  In a world full of sequels and reboots, Guardians of the Galaxy might be what the movie world needs.  It’s a risk.  It might pay off and it might be a disaster but at least Marvel is willing to give these characters a shot.   Who knows what might be possible if Guardians succeeds at the box office.  Perhaps a few of them will appear in The Avengers 2 to help stop Thanos for good.

I’m ready for a new super hero franchise but for the first time, I have no idea what to expect.  We all knew what Spider-Man would be like in 2002 and we certainly knew what to expect when it was rebooted in 2012.  People know Batman and Superman.  We are all familiar with Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk and Thor.

If you’re like me, Guardians of the Galaxy is a complete mystery but I’m perfectly happy with that.

Should The Avengers Get An Oscar Nomination? Could The Dark Knight Rises?

Should The Avengers Get An Oscar Nomination?

Movies vs Films…  I like to think my taste in movies falls somewhere in between.  So while I LOVE the summer movie season, I’m also a big fan of the dramas that regularly populate the awards season each year.

I’ve seen The Avengers three times.  I love that movie.  Critics love that movie.  Audiences around the world love that movie.  But… Is Marvel’s The Avengers an Oscar contender?

The most fun I’ve ever had watching the Oscars was the year Return of the King dominated.  I felt like I was cheering for the Blue Jays. (My favorite sports team.)  Eleven times they announced that fantasy ruled the cinematic world that year.  I was filled with a sense of pride.  It’s fun to cheer on the movies you love.

On the other hand, sometimes your favorites aren’t even nominated.  The Dark Knight did NOT receive a best picture nod which was incredibly frustrating for me.  Realistically, I didn’t expect it to win but I felt that Christopher Nolan’s masterpiece deserved at least a nomination.  Thankfully, the Academy did recognize Heath Ledger’s legendary performance as The Joker.

Should The Avengers Get An Oscar Nomination?

With Gladiator being a notable exception, there haven’t been many summer action movies in contention come awards season.  I suppose Avatar kind of fits the bill but it was released in December.  Still, the landscape has changed a lot since Peter Jackson received the night’s final and most prestigious award.

With Christopher Nolan’s Batman franchise leading the way, superhero movies have evolved immensely.  It’s a series of films that made all of us believe comic book movies can be Oscar contenders.  Perhaps it’s time the Academy took notice of the blockbuster entertainment being served in the Summer months.

Want to spice up the Oscar broadcast?  Stick a summer horse in the race if it deserves it.  What’s the worst that could happen?

Having said that, before that plan can work, the movies must deliver.  For every Dark Knight there is a Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen after all.

Should The Avengers Get An Oscar Nomination?

First and foremost, The Avengers delivered on impossibly huge expectations.  It was a FUN movie.  Marvel’s universe collided on the big screen and crushed box office records in the process.  To say that Joss Whedon’s film is an overwhelming success is an understatement.  90%+ on Rotten Tomatoes from the critics and the fans and over billion dollars grossed and counting.

The Avengers is a movie that nearly everyone seemed to love.  That’s an award worthy movie in my books.  Again I stress I don’t think it would win but a little comic book love is overdue isn’t it?

To me, the brains behind The Avengers deserve an Oscar nomination JUST for pulling it off.  Merging 4 larger than life heroes into one movie that delivers is an achievement worth recognizing.  Not only that, the seamless blend of action, character and humor was so much fun to watch…  Three times.

Of course, two summer movies sneaking in would be a bit farfetched.  But what if? What if TDKR and The Avengers are deserving?

XTRA | The Dark Knight Rises Trailer Top 5 Moments.

It’ll be interesting to see the results after The Dark Knight Rises launches this July.  Will Christopher Nolan’s Gotham enjoy the same fate as Peter Jackson’s Middle Earth?  Part of me thinks The Dark Knight Rises may prevent The Avengers from getting a nomination.  Is this a year we see not one but two comic book movies honored on Oscar night?

…  Let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

For now, The Avengers will continue tearing up screens around the world.  I’m already looking forward to adding the blu ray to my collection.  I’m thankful The Avengers exists especially after such a long wait to finally see it.  It exceeded my expectations and will most definitely appear on my Top 5 movies of 2012.

But will it be in the Top 5-10 come Oscar time?  I wouldn’t be surprised if it wasn’t but wouldn’t it be cool if it was?

The Road To The Avengers: Getting To Know THOR

The Road To The Avengers: Getting To Know THOR | Thor Review 2011 | Movie Blog

Growing up, I was never an obsessive comic book reader but I had a modest collection regardless.  I knew enough about Marvel’s superheroes but not nearly enough to claim I KNEW Thor.  There is obviously a big difference between knowing a heroes name and knowing who they are and where they come from.

So when I sat down to a 3D matinee today, I truly didn’t know what to expect beyond the what the trailers and movie sites showed me.

… Thor’s pretty cool.

The Road To The Avengers: Getting To Know THOR | Thor Review 2011 | Movie Blog

I’m a sucker for comic book movies and big summer action flicks but I was always on the fence about Thor.  If anything, I was excited to see this movie to catch all the references to next summer’s The Avengers.  A movie event that will surely (hopefully) wow us all.

At the same time, I have to admit I was curious about that tiny hammer and the land called Asgard.  I was excited to get to know Thor, his world and his enemies.

Introducing a god like character from another realm into Marvel’s ‘earth based’ world had to be tough.  Rainbow bridges, over sized helmets and Frost Giants can be difficult to portray on screen but they did a phenomenal job.

I went in hoping for more clues for the upcoming Avengers team up. I left the theater with an appreciation for Thor and I’m officially excited to see how he fits into the larger picture.  It’s pretty amazing to hear a line like “I’ll be your ally” and know exactly what he is talking about.

He’s talking about the enormous evil power that will rise and cause the world’s heroes to unite in order to defeat it!

What I loved the most about Thor was that it was nothing like Iron Man 2. The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, Thor and Captain America need to stand up on their own for this universe to work according to Marvel’s plan.  Iron Man 2 seemed like nothing more than a setup for the following movies but Thor doesn’t fall into that trap.  It’s a damn good movie that can exist on it’s own without The Avengers’ references taking over.  Marvel has learned from their past mistakes and I couldn’t be happier.

Natalie Portman isn’t really given much to do here but that’s because most of the excitement takes place in Thor’s home of Asgard.  This may turn some people off but I bought it.  I think Asgard is the film’s one cool element that’s sets Thor apart from his Avenger buddies.  It’s a new world and they did a fantastic job incorporating it into the Marvel Movie Universe.  Personally, I can’t wait to see what mischief Loki cooks up next!  (He’s awesome by the way. Stay until the credits are over.  But you already knew that right?)

Thor is a solid summer blockbuster.  I had a blast discovering who he is and where he comes from but beyond all that:

I want to know more!

Thankfully, the road to The Avengers continues this summer with Captain America up next.  Will The First Avenger continue to build on this amazing world Marvel is creating?  I can’t wait to spend a weekend watching all of these movies back to back!  Thor definitely fits in.  Let’s hope Captain America belongs as well…

In the mean time, the one thing I can’t seem to get out of my mind?

What evil could be so great that all of these powerful heroes are needed to defeat it?  It’s going to have to be one hell of an evil plot.  Holy crap I can’t wait to find out what it is!

To be continued…

10 Flicks: Awesome Upcoming Superhero Movies

10 Flicks: Incredible Upcoming Superhero Movies

I believe we are entering a Golden Age for superhero movies.

There are so many incredible films on the way with loads of potential.

How good are the upcoming superhero movies?

Here are 10 of the biggest and best.  Check them out and count how many you’re looking forward to.

*Be sure to come back as I will be updating this page with new images and trailers as they are released.*

Thor. Upcoming superhero movies 2011

Thor is probably my least anticipated film on this list because I really don’t know that much about the character.  However, Thor has a giant role to play in the upcoming Avengers movie so I’m definitely interested in learning more.  Part of me truly hopes it turns out to be a bad ass action adventure.

The first trailer has been released!  I’m officially pumped to see this movie.

The super bowl spot unleashes more action!

Cowboys & Aliens

The first poster for the film has been released and it looks amazing!

It looks like John Favreau and co. are unleashing one hell of an entertaining film next summer.

X-Men: First Class

Hardcore fans of Bryan Singer’s X-Men may not be so eager to embrace this reboot but I am.  I’m not sure what to expect from this adaptation but I’m a massive fan of the source material.  Plus I have enormous faith in Matthew Vaughn.  Kick ass was fantastic.

x men first class movie magneto

The Green Hornet

This movie sounded extremely strange when I first heard about it.  Could Seth Rogen really be a superhero? After seeing the first trailer, I believe the answer is yes.  He is a different kind of superhero but it still looks like an entertaining movie.

The Amazing Spider-Man

First look at Andrew Garfield as spider-man

[UPDATE] The first official image of Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man has hit the web!  I have to say it looks pretty damn sweet!

The first two Spider-Man movies are among the best superhero movies of all time. Understandably, it was time to inject some new life into the franchise and I actually think that rebooting with a younger Peter Parker is the right way to go.

My only real concern is whether or not the filmmakers can balance the inevitable high school drama with decent action sequences. I’m already sold on Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man and now that we know he will face off against The Lizard, I’m even more excited about the possibilities.

Check out this amazing image of Andrew Garfield in costume with the legendary mask on!

The Amazing Spiderman Andrew Garfield superhero movie

Captain America: The First Avenger

Captain America looks awesome | Poster

Captain America is in the same category as Thor.  I don’t know too much about him but I’m extremely interested in how Marvel will tie all of their big franchises together.  If the movie is half as good as the image above we are in for one hell of a show.

Superbowl commercial…  I gotta say the shot with Cap running through a forest in the middle of battle was amazing.  So was Red Skulls reveal.  Still I wasn’t blown away by the spot.

Green Lantern

Green lantern ryan reynolds 2011 superhero movie

Ryan Reynolds is definitely on a huge roll right now. Every single Green Lantern image that I’ve seen has been amazing.

Now that the trailer has been unleashed, I have to say it does look pretty damn entertaining.

Check out the first 4 minutes from the film.

The Avengers

The Avengers upcoming superhero movie 2012

Did anyone ever think this film would have come together the way it did?

Count the superstars on that stage.  It’s truly remarkable what Marvel has done with their superhero franchises.

This is probably the riskiest film on this list as the amount of hype surrounding this movie is enormous.

It’s going to be extremely challenging to deliver something entertaining with that many heroes on the screen.

Again it all comes down to the story. They definitely have the star power but it’s up to Joss Whedon and his team to come up with something worthy of one of the best ensembles in history.

Whether they nail it or not, The Avengers is going to rewrite the superhero movie forever.

I can’t wait to watch Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America, The Incredible Hulk and The Avengers ‘marathon style’.

NOTE: This film isn’t released until 2012 but I didn’t think it would hurt to update it regardless considering so many movies on this list will affect the production.

Transformers: Dark Of The Moon

10 Flicks: Awesome Upcoming Superhero Movies 2011

Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen was terrible.

Click here to find out why Transformers 3 won’t suck.

I’m so excited to see more giant robot action on the big screen. Everything I’ve read about the film gives me more and more confidence that they will erase the memory of The Fallen from my mind.

I was so excited to see that movie and I was shattered when the credits rolled.  I wish it wasn’t the case but it’s true.  However, I’ll never give up on a franchise easily.

I’ll be in line on day 1 for this blockbuster event… In 3D.

The Transformers are back!  I loved the Superbowl commercial!  This is probably my most anticipated movie of the summer thus far!

[Update] Henry Cavill has officially been announced as the new Superman.  Nice!

Handing the keys to the Superman franchise over to Christopher Nolan was genius.  The guy simply knows how to tell a good story.

He’s easily my favorite directors right now and having his name attached instantly puts this film at the top of the list.

He went out and hired Zak Snyder to direct the movie with a screenplay written by David Goyer…

You hear that?  That’s the sound of the best Superman adaptation of all time.

Yes… I’m prepared to make that statement.

Get ready for a gritty slow motion filled adventure featuring one of the most iconic heroes in history.

The Dark Knight Rises

[UPDATE] Catwoman and Bane! Anne Hathaway and Tom Hardy are confirmed as the infamous villains in The Dark Knight Rises

The Dark Knight is my favorite superhero movie in the history of the world.  Nothing against the amazing Batman Begins but The Dark Knight is THE definitive Batman movie.

This third and presumably final Batman film that Nolan will give us will pull out all the stops and raise the stakes like never before.

I like to think that he had a plan the entire time and was always building towards this third chapter.  Whether that’s true or not may never be revealed but I have no doubt Mr. Nolan has a few surprises in store for us.  It saddens me to think about his vision for The Joker and how he may have carried over to this film.

It’s a shame we won’t get a chance to see Heath Ledger’s wonderful work on screen again.  The word ‘legendary’ comes to mind.

The next villain that Bruce Wayne faces will definitely have some giant shoes to fill.  Yet, somehow, I truly believe he/she will.

There’s no way this movie will fall flat even with the nearly impossible expectations people like me have.

I have a feeling this film will complete one of the greatest trilogies ever.

Which movie are you anticipating?  Are there several?

It truly is a good time to be a fan of superhero movies!
