Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase Two: 10 Things I'm Looking Forward To

Marvel set out to create a massive cinematic universe and delivered on that promise.  Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Captain America: The First Avenger & Thor told separate stories but everything led to The Avengers.  To say that Phase One was a success is an understatement.  It’s not everyday you get to see 4 major franchises come together so brilliantly.  Bring on Phase Two!

How will Tony Stark overcome the events of The Avengers in Iron Man 3?  What threat will the Dark Elves pose against Thor in Thor: The Dark World.  Captain America continues to adjust to the modern world in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.  We will meet a new team of cosmic heroes in Guardians of The Galaxy.  Last but not least, The Avengers take on the Mad Titan Thanos in The Avengers 2.

It’s an amazing time to be a Marvel fan.

Here are 10 things I’m looking forward to in Phase Two:

The only thing that kept Captain America from being my least favorite Phase One film was Iron Man 2.  The reason is because of the origin story.  It took a really long time before we finally got a look at Cap in action.  Understandably, it was a necessary story to tell and I understand that.  I didn’t like it as much as I wanted to but he exists now.

Thanks to The Avengers, we got many glimpses of what The First Avenger can do…  And it’s pretty awesome.

I can’t wait to see a full Captain America movie without the need to establish his origin.  It’s time for a full tilt, action filled hero fest!

The final battles in Iron Man and Iron Man 2 weren’t the greatest in my opinion.  I doubt Iron Man will fight The Mandarin in a fist fight but there’s no way the finale won’t be massive.  Just look at all the Iron Man suits in the second trailer:

I think Iron Man 3 will kick start Phase Two in a BIG way and I can’t wait to see it.

8. SO…  LOKI…

How will Loki fit into Marvel’s Cinematic Universe after his action in The Avengers.

“….  Sorry?”

I think he will still be a force to be reckoned with especially with Thor distracted by Maleketh.  I’m also curious to see if Loki mentions anything about his connection to Thanos and what lies ahead.  Love him or hate him, he has answers…  And I want those answers.

Which major characters will appear in other movies?  Are The Avengers truly disassembled until The Avengers 2 in 2015?

We really got a sense of what Marvel had up it’s sleeve when Nick Fury appeared at the end of Iron Man.  Whether it’s Tony Stark in the Incredible Hulk or Hawkeye in Thor you never knew who would appear next.

That trend will most certainly continue in Phase Two.  Part of the fun will be catching all the subtle references they will include in the next slate of films.

We’ve already seen glimpses of New York after the events of The Avengers as well as the effect it’s had on Tony Stark.  I can’t wait to see how the world has changed after Loki opened a portal and unleashed an alien army on the world.

What’s different?  How has humanity evolved now that these threats have been revealed?  What do people think of The Avengers now?  I think the majority of the answers will be dealt with in Iron Man 3 and Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

But what about the rest of the universe?

It’s very unlikely we will see The Hulk again until The Avengers 2 premieres.  He isn’t getting a standalone movie any time soon but I think saving him is a good move.  Watching Hulk punch giant alien snakes in the face was part of the fun of The Avengers.  We may see Bruce Banner pop up at some point before then but I’m willing to wait.  It’s going to be awesome when the Hulk is unleashed again.

No one will ever leave at the end of a Marvel movie again.  We all know the extra scene is coming.  A teaser of what’s to come.  A few moments that connect these movies together in ways that frustrate and delight fans.  (I say frustrate because the wait for answers can be painful.)

When we last left a Marvel movie, they gave us a glimpse of the villain who will be the center piece of Phase Two…  Thanos.

The ending of Iron Man 3 is rumored to introduce The Guardians of the Galaxy.  I know it’s a lot to ask but it would be nice if they at least mentioned Thanos.  Either way, I’m really looking forward to the bonus scenes.  Especially double bonus scenes like this:

A brand new Marvel franchise!?

I don’t know much about The Guardians of the Galaxy but I’m looking forward to learning more about them.  A Marvel movie directed by James Gunn set in space with talking Trees and Raccoons might seem risky but I’m excited.

The very idea that Marvel’s is expanding their universe is exciting enough.  What’s more exciting is the connection this movie will have with Thanos.  It will no doubt lead directly to The Avengers 2.

Who doesn’t love a good villain?  When Marvel announced The Avengers people wondered who the villain might be.  It was ultimately revealed to be Loki but it wasn’t his plan.  It’s always been Thanos.  We may not have seen him but he’s been around the whole time plotting against humanity.

Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase Two: 10 Things I'm Looking Forward To

It’s unprecedented to have not one but many films to set up a villain.  Especially one as powerful as The Mad Titan Thanos.  I’ve read about the history surrounding the character and his connections to The Avengers & The Guardians but what will the cinematic version of Thanos be like?

Will he impact the events of the films leading up to The Avengers 2 directly?  Or will he take a back seat and allow pawns like Loki take center stage.  When will we see him again?  What’s his plan?

…  I want answers!!!

Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase Two: 10 Things I'm Looking Forward To

It took years to set up the events of Marvel’s The Avengers and we are in for another long but entertaining ride.  Along the way, we’ll catch up with Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and the rest of shield.  We’ll get updates on Bruce Banner and the ‘other’ guy.  We will meet the Guardians of the Galaxy and learn more about the looming threat known as Thanos.

Through all of these fantastic adventures we will all be wondering how it will all end.  How will these films connect?  What does Marvel really have planned for Phase Two?

Everything leads to The Avengers 2 and it’s going to be an amazing adventure indeed.

Phase Two is about to begin.  Cinematic history is about to be made.

Top 10 Moments: Marvel's The Avengers | Best Avengers Moments

Marvel fans waited years for The Avengers to arrive.  Thankfully, when it did, it exploded world wide and became one of the most successful movies in history.  Joss Whedon brought the Marvel Universe together brilliantly in a movie that entertained millions.  The Avengers was a FUN movie to experience.

Movies events like The Avengers don’t come along very often and it’ll be interesting to see where The Marvel Universe takes us next.  If Iron Man 3 is any indication, we’re heading into darker territory which is fantastic.  I can’t wait to see what Thanos will unleash upon Marvel’s heroes in a few years.  Bring on Phase Two.

“That man is playing Galaga.”

I can’t imagine the amount of trouble someone would be in if they played Galaga in the Pentagon during an Alien invasion.  S.H.E.I.L.D is a pretty lenient organization.

Apparently you’re able to buy the vintage set?  Not sure how collectable and/or cool they would be featuring Chris Evans but an old school comic book Steve Rogers set would be cool.

I think this moment was meant for audiences.  Many people thought they wouldn’t pull off a movie of this magnitude.  By the time The Avengers ended, we were all happy we spent the 10 bucks.

So Thor nails Hulk with his hammer…  I’m a big fan of the frustration Hulk feels when he can’t pick up Mjolnir.  Puny hammer.

It’s amazing how a tiny glimpse of Thanos sets the stage for Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy & The Avengers 2.  We don’t know what it means yet but Marvel has hit their stride.  Phase Two is going to be pretty special.

I saw The Avengers 3 times in theaters and this moment was a crowd favorite every single time.

Top 10 Moments: Marvel's The Avengers | Best Avengers Moments

My favorite shot of the movie.  It’s long and it’s full of incredible and continuous action.  Two moments really stand out during the shot:

  1. Captain America reflects Iron Man’s blaster off his shield.
  2. Hulk & Thor team up to hammer an electrified sky snake scale into it’s face.

Top 10 Moments: Marvel's The Avengers | Best Avengers Moments

An incredible moment.  Who would have thought Marvel could bring these franchises together?  Seeing all the heroes together ready to take on an army gave me chills and still does.  What an epic cinematic moment.

Top 10 Moments: Marvel's The Avengers | Best Avengers Moments

The Party could (and probably should) be the number one moment but there are a few reasons why I picked this particular moment.  First, it’s hilarious.  Second, how long have we waited to see Hulk really go to town and smash things.  The Incredible Hulk did an admirable job but this is clearly THE Hulk we’ve all been waiting to see.  He picks up a God and proceeds to slam the crap out of him right in the middle of a monologue.

I hope we get another standalone Hulk movie someday.  It’s been hinted that Phase Three might feature a Hulk movie.  For now we have moments like these to watch as we await The Avengers 2.

I'm glad I don't know anything about Guardians of the Galaxy | Preview

When Thanos smiled at the very thought of courting death at the end of The Avengers, it was clear Marvel had a cosmic slate in mind.  They’ve already referenced Thanos by displaying the Infinity Gauntlet in Thor so I wouldn’t be surprised if this new threat appears in Thor: The Dark World in some way.  But it will be interesting to see if they include Thanos in Iron Man 3 and Captain America: The Winter Soldier.  Those franchises weren’t really linked to the stars until Cap and Stark joined forces to fight Loki’s army in The Avengers.

How will Phase Two’s slate of blockbusters connect together?  What part will Thanos play?  What do Joss Whedon and Marvel have in store for us?

This is why Guardians of the Galaxy is a key addition to the universe.  It’s a perfect way to focus on the cosmos and truly develop a threat far greater than Loki’s ego.

Although…  I really have no idea what to expect from a franchise I know nothing about…

To be honest, I’m pretty excited that I can go into this film and discover a new world…  That’s kind of connected to a world I’m very familiar with.

Here is an official log line:

“A U.S. pilot who ends up in space in the middle of a universal conflict and goes on the run with futuristic ex-cons who have something everyone wants.”

A little digging online helped me understand how the Guardians factor into the Thanos storyline.  It’s easy to understand why Marvel gave this movie the green light.  I’m willing to leave it at that.  But I thought I’d include some Thanos/Guardians links I found around the web:

I’m far from an expert on comic books and I certainly haven’t delved into the farthest corners of Marvel’s universe but I’m excited to meet some new people.  In a world full of sequels and reboots, Guardians of the Galaxy might be what the movie world needs.  It’s a risk.  It might pay off and it might be a disaster but at least Marvel is willing to give these characters a shot.   Who knows what might be possible if Guardians succeeds at the box office.  Perhaps a few of them will appear in The Avengers 2 to help stop Thanos for good.

I’m ready for a new super hero franchise but for the first time, I have no idea what to expect.  We all knew what Spider-Man would be like in 2002 and we certainly knew what to expect when it was rebooted in 2012.  People know Batman and Superman.  We are all familiar with Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk and Thor.

If you’re like me, Guardians of the Galaxy is a complete mystery but I’m perfectly happy with that.

The Avengers Anticipation: It's Over Now... And It Makes Me Sad | The Avengers 2012 Review

All of the speculation, rumors, hype, skepticism, anticipation, news, casting, trailers, promos, tv spots, plot details, posters and more are behind us now.  After years of planning, Marvel has gathered their movie universe into one action packed 2.5 hour event…  So how did it all turn out?

The Avengers delivered on and exceeded everyone’s expectations.

I absolutely loved it.  It’ll take a couple repeat viewings but currently, The Avengers may settle into my Top 5 favorite movies of all time.  I loved it that much.  But something funny happened once the credits rolled and I caught my breath…  I was a little sad.

Movie hype is a funny thing…  You can spend years looking forward to a movie.  Sometimes the film is everything you hoped it would be, other times it isn’t.  But the following morning you realize that you don’t have to scour the web for tidbits of new information.  You aren’t wishing for a new trailer or clip to be released anymore.  You’ve seen the film.

I’m going to miss looking forward to The Avengers…

9 months ago, I wrote a post called: Wouldn’t it be awesome if The Avengers is one of the greatest superhero movies of all time?

It is.

From the beginning, we’ve all wondered what it would be like if Iron Man, Thor, Hulk and Captain America shared the screen.  Would it be a train wreck?  Negative, it’s a superheroic masterpiece.  It’s a PERFECT summer movie.

When I write reviews, I tend to write about the experience rather than focusing on plot details and specific things I did (or didn’t) like.  Honestly, I haven’t that much fun in a theater since the original Paranormal Activity was released.  No, I’m not comparing The Avengers to Paranormal Activity creatively.  But sitting in both audiences reminded me of how much fun it is to see a film in theaters.

The Avengers Anticipation: It's Over Now... And It Makes Me Sad | The Avengers 2012 Review

The Avengers is full of wonderful moments.  It’s packed with cool things you have never seen before.  It was also absolutely hilarious.  Throughout the movie, the entire audience was roaring with laughter one moment and stunned the next at the visual marvels on the screen.  It was electric in that room.  I mentioned Paranormal Activity because the audience behaved similarly.  It wasn’t a room full of people.  It was one entity reacting to the film together as one.  It’s a beautiful experience to have and I was smiling ear to ear for nearly 3 hours as a result.

Much like the final chapter of Harry Potter, this was an EVENT.  It took Marvel years of work spanning 5 films just to set up the events of The Avengers.  It all culminated in a film that skillfully balances character with breathtaking action.  (Thank you Joss Whedon)

That’s why the movie broke records.  It’s a must see.  Even the most casual fan won’t be able to wait until it’s available on demand.  People want to see what all the fuss is about.  The result? Over 200 million dollars in 3 days domestically.  That’s impressive enough but when you factor in stellar reviews from both critics and fans it’s hard to ignore the cultural impact this film will have moving forward.

Part of the fun of event movies is the hype.  Even now, 2 days after seeing the film, I’m still thinking about how much fun it was to follow the film’s development.  Thankfully, it’s not the same feeling I had when the Harry Potter franchise ended because that adventure was over.  There was a finality to it. (Much like another little event movie called The Dark Knight Rises)

Today, I find hope knowing that the minute the film ended, hype for The Avengers 2 had begun.  It’ll be years before we hear rumblings of another assembly but you can bet it’ll be followed by more than just hardcore superhero fans.

The Avengers Anticipation: It's Over Now... And It Makes Me Sad | The Avengers 2012 Review

So while we wait to find out what Thanos has in store for our heroes in The Avengers 2, we can rest easy that much more Marvel is on the way.  Interest will be higher than ever for Iron Man 3, Thor 2, Captain America 2 and hopefully another Hulk movie.  The Marvel universe is fully loaded now and I can’t wait to see what they fire up next.

Until that time we all get to marvel at what… (ahem) Marvel has accomplished with this movie. The Avengers is for anyone who loves massive action and epic scale.  It’s for anyone who loves entertaining summer blockbusters.

The Avengers is for anyone who loves heroes…  And things that are awesome.
