A Sunday Morning With Pixar’s Brave

A Sunday Morning With Pixar's Brave | Brave Review

PIXAR CREATES ANOTHER GORGEOUS WORLD…  BUT…

I love cartoons.  I’ve always been fascinated by the amount of work that goes into an animated film be it CG or hand drawn.  I grew up surrounded by Disney classics like Peter Pan, Aladdin, The Lion King, Beauty & The Beast and more.  Then Pixar came along and brought us places we never thought animation could go.  Toy Story inspired me like no other cartoon ever had and the hits kept coming.  One after another, Pixar delivered gorgeous new worlds with loveable characters and a imaginative stories.

Pixar’s tales were full of laughter & emotion.  All from the minds of passionate story tellers and dedicated artists.  I’ve said it many times: I really wish I could draw…

XTRA | Confessions of a Wannabe Animator

I never got around to catching Pixar’s Brave when it was in theaters.  (It didn’t help that I wasn’t really that interested) Still, new cartoons are hard to pass up at home on a relaxing Sunday morning.  So my wife and I rented it and once again, Pixar delivered a remarkable world.  The technological leaps they’ve made over the years is simply astounding.  Merida’s flowing red hair is a perfect example of what the studio is capable of.  Brave is a beautiful movie.

However, I felt the characters and story just didn’t have the same impact.  Perhaps it’s not fair to continuously compare Pixar’s current films with the classics of the past but we’ve come to expect so much from them.  I thought Brave’s story was extremely simple almost to a fault.  It’s understandable that Pixar set out to tell a story about the relationship between a mother and daughter but that’s really where it ends.  There aren’t many surprises to be found.  Merida is upset with her mother, acts out, makes a mistake, fixes her mistake and is no longer upset with her mother.

I also felt the supporting cast lacked a real standout.  The closest thing in Brave is the triplets.  They offer a few laughs here and there but they disappear for chunks of time and really don’t contribute much until the end.

To me, Brave set out to tell a story and succeeded.  (I still think they are geniuses.) It just seemed like they found their story and stopped there.  They didn’t push further nor did they take risks.  Here is the story.  Thanks for your time.

Having said that, I still think Brave is one of the best looking animated films of all time and I adore the setting they chose for the film.  The voice acting is spectacular as always and it is a nice little tale.  It just isn’t the classic I hoped it would be.  Bring on Monsters University.

The Athletic Nerd’s Movie Power Rankings 1-15

The Athletic Nerd Movie Power Rankings

Go to any major sports website and you will find Power Rankings.  A popular ranking system that lists every team in a league from best to worst.

Since I work for a sports network, it makes perfect sense to take that system and rank my favorite movies of all time.

Except I’m doing things a little differently.  These won’t be updated weekly. (That would be ridiculous) However, you will find links to stories I’ve written on the films in addition to trailers and bonus posts.

The Athletic Nerd Movie Power Rankings

Signs

M. Night Shyamalan’s film inspired me to become a better screenwriter.  There are definitely a ton of people out there who disagree with my number 1 pick but I stand by it.  I feel like writing every single time I see it.

The Dark Knight

Christopher Nolan created the greatest superhero movie of all time.

The Matrix

All three films are included in this pick.  Many people loved the first film but hated the trilogy as a whole but I disagree.  I didn’t love Revolutions but Reloaded was incredible.  Plus, you really can’t deny how amazing the first film was.  Outstanding.

A Few Good Men

My favorite screenplay.  I could watch those intense courtroom exchanges every single day.

Good Will Hunting

When it comes to compelling characters, Will Hunting ranks very high for me.

The Shawshank Redemption

I don’t think I’ve ever met a human being who didn’t like this movie.  Just saying.

Dumb & Dumber

My #1 favorite comedy.  The most quotable movie of all time amongst my circle of friends.

Toy Story

The first full length computer animated film is still the best.  Then they went and followed it up with 2 stellar sequels.

The Lord of the Rings

An unbelievable filmmaking achievement.  I watch every second of the trilogy AND the billion hours of special features at least once a year.

The Sandlot

A classic baseball movie.  For a movie nerd obsessed with sports, it doesn’t get much better than this.

Goodfellas

Of course Martin Scorsese has a place on this list.

A Beautiful Mind

I love fascinating characters and John Nash’s story is brilliantly brought to life by Russell Crowe and director Ron Howard.

Inception

Christopher Nolan.  His dream invading caper changed the way I’ll look at original screenplays forever.  The best movie of 2010.

Gladiator

It’s always a proud moment when your favorite movie wins the Oscar.  Russell Crowe appears twice in the top 15!  Not bad.

Garden State

I almost ignored this movie due to lack of interest.  That would have been a huge mistake on my part.

The Final Rainy Sunday: The Beauty Of Lazy Day Movies

Rainy Sundays was one of the first features I created for this blog.

It was about appreciated those lazy days when you put on your favorite movies and escape.

Who doesn’t love a good Sunday afternoon indoors watching movies?

Personally, my ideal Rainy Sunday includes a good drama, a comforter, a massive sandwich or pizza and some form of candy.  It’s even better when there’s enough time to sneak in a double feature.

What movies do you love to watch on rainy days?

After more than 30 picks, I’ve decided to move on so this will be the FINAL Rainy Sunday post.

Below you’ll find the complete Rainy Sunday Series.

Perhaps, I’ll resurrect the feature someday but I think I’ve made my point.  There’s nothing like a good movie on a lazy day.

Rainy Sundays Movie Picks

For the first time, my Rainy Sundays pick is a lazy day double feature.

Toy Story is easily my favorite Pixar movie of all time and it’s sequel it’s equally impressive.  (Although with Pixar everything is impressive.)

Side Note: Click here for the all time best Pixar Character.

With the third installment rocking theaters in 3D right now, I thought going back and watching the first two installments would be a perfect way to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon.

Toy Story Double Feature

Toy Story blew me away the first time I saw it.

I couldn’t believe what I was watching.  The first computer animated movie with an incredibly entertaining and touching story.  Pixar films truly embody what this feature is all about.

Movies are meant to take you away to another world and ignite your imagination.  What better way to spend a lazy afternoon?  Especially if it’s raining on a laid back Sunday.

Look no further than Toy Story and it’s masterful sequel if you are looking to kick back with a couple of good movies on a quiet lazy day.

All Time Best: Pixar Character

All Time Best Movie Moments

This All Time Best post is dedicated to my favorite Pixar character of all time and it’s not who you would expect.

I went obscure on this one because he still makes me laugh.

The runner up: Hamm from Toy Story.

“You’ve heard of Kung Fu? Well prepare yourself for pork chop!”

It’s really hard to narrow down one single character out of hundreds of hilarious creations but I’m pretty proud of my pick:

Jacques (Finding Nemo)

jacques finding nemo

“Jacques?”

“Oui?”

“No cleaning!”

“I shall resist.”

Finding Nemo has a ton of amazing characters but Jacques sticks out for me.  There’s just something about this little guy makes me laugh more than any other Pixar character and that’s saying something.  I think he may have 10 lines of dialogue in the entire movie but the filmmakers made every single one of them count.

Fantastic character.

Point.  Pixar.
