Why you should be excited about Trance

Why you should be excited about Trance Danny Boyle

First of all, if you haven’t seen it already, go and check out the recent Trance Trailer. If you weren’t excited about Danny Boyle’s up-coming heist thriller yet, this will whet your appetite.

The Cast

Simon, the art dealer trying to uncover hidden memories, is played by James McAvoy. McAvoy has shown strong promise in the likes of Atonement and X-men: First Class. Here he plays a well rounded character, forced into a more unique position. Considering some of the more escapist and psychological segments of the trailer, McAvoy has done well to deliver what looks set to be a strong performance.

Much of this, of course, is played against the other cast members. Rosario Dawson (Seven Pounds, Sin City), plays the hypnotherapist trying to help unlock these memories. The two bounce off each other flawlessly, both playing cards close to their chest as they dance around each other throughout the trailer. Vincent Cassel is thrown into this mix as the standard villain but, as with anything to do with Danny Boyle, things aren’t always that easy. Cassel looks set to be a performance to watch; his role as Franck is intimidating yet intelligent.

The Plot

Whilst the plot itself is simple enough—Simon needs to get his memories back so the criminals led by Franck can find the lost painting, the execution seems to be done on a much deeper level. The interactions between the key characters alone open up more possibilities. The film contrasts the higher class, intellectual lifestyle of Simon with the darker imagery of the criminal underworld demonstrated by Franck. Bouncing between these is the character of Elizabeth, which opens up much of the psychological aspects of the film.

Although sometimes the bad guys are just more interesting, there doesn’t seem to be a clear-cut division in Trance. Everyone seems well developed, with their own interests and secrets to hide. By now, character and emotional exploration is something we should easily expect from Danny Boyle, but it never ceases to excite and intrigue. It gives the film any number of directions to go, and audiences are likely to read very different interpretations.

The trailer alone suggests food for thought, and the full film is likely to follow suit when it opens on March 27th.
