Safety shoes are structured in different classes. At first glance, they seem complicated. We give you an overview of abbreviations such as S1, S1P, and S3.
Security Class SB
There is class SB. Shoes in this class are, in principle, regular shoes that are provided with a protective cap that is certified following DIN EN 12568. Thus, shoes of this class are the simplest models. However, due to the low level of protective measures, the area of application for these shoes is relatively limited. Usually, you see such shoes in medical facilities, such as hospitals, where no significant dangers are to be expected, for example, in the form of clogs like the “7131041” from ABEBA. Security Class S2
The safety class S2 is relatively easy to explain. It is identical to class S1 except for one crucial detail: the water-repellent treatment. The upper material, which is mainly made of leather from this class, is subjected to a 30-minute test with splash water. During this time, the shoes are “walked” in a basin with a 5 cm high layer of water. That corresponds roughly to a rain shower with corresponding puddles. The material must not absorb more than 30% of its volume in water.
Security Class S3
Safety class S3 is identical to class S2 except for two points: A penetration protection is installed, and the splash water test extends to 60 minutes. Contrary to popular belief, class S2 and S3 safety shoes are not waterproof but “only” water-repellent. S3 shoes are among the most widespread safety shoes of all classes. Shoes can be worn in almost any work environment without any problems.
Security Class S4 And S5
Continue with classes S4 and S5. These classes are identical to S2 and S3 but must be fully closed and waterproof. Due to these requirements, safety shoes (รองเท้า safety which is the term in Thai) of this class are found almost exclusively as rubber boots. The great advantage of these materials is their specific resistance to chemicals and easy maintenance. Class S5, such as the “Safest Black” rubber boot, also has penetration protection installed.
